Contract manufacturing - Chemical modification of biomass
Novel bio-based materials
KCL has an extensive knowledge on various chemical modifications of cellulose pulp and biomaterials.
We have dedicated reactors and proprietary processes for esterification or etherification of cellulose fibers, like carboxymethylation, phosphorylation, sulphation or cationization of cellulose. The products can be fully washed after reaction and any harmful components captured and recovered and/or recycled from the related sidestreams using our advanced ultrafiltration systems. In addition, full OPEX/CAPEX analysis can be performed for tailored chemical processes to facilitate customers investment projects.
Examples
- Chemical derivatization of cellulose pulp
- Esterification and etherification at high consistency
- Mixing of reagents with pulp fibers at high or low consistency
- Drying and reaction at high consistency continuous or batch process, option to capture and scrub gaseous waste
- Washing continuous or batch process, waste collection and concentration by nanofiltration
- Oxidation treatments
- Various oxidation technologies at low or medium consistency
- Chemical derivatization of other biomass
- Hemicellulose, lignin
- Aqueous process at medium to high consistency
- Washing by micro/nanofiltration technologies
The derivatized biomaterials can be further analysed in our laboratory and full characteristics and fiber dimensions and chemical compositions can be studied.
